We gather today on the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. On this day, the priest wears a rose-colored vestment, and we light the rose-colored candle. During the next two weekends, we look towards the birthday of Christ and set our hearts on the miracle of God who became man. This is indeed a busy time for everybody but as I have been saying in my homily for the last two weekends, don’t shortchange your souls or the souls of your children. Do make time to come to the sacrament of Confession on Monday, December 13th from 6:00-8:30 pm.
Last Saturday night, the Knights of Columbus covering the area of Washington Township held their major fundraiser here at St. Luke. Fr. Mike gave the opening blessing, and we were delighted to see him back at the parish that he so loved. Fr. Marcin the pastor of OLM and St. Mark’s Parish attended with his vicar, Fr. Michal. My brother knights worked very hard in running a fun-filled event. They were assisted by the Columbiettes and an energetic team of young runners who brought auction gifts to the tables. The auctions were fun and with our fund-raising activities help the Knights to provide for their many charitable events in the coming year. The Knights auctioned a dinner at the rectory which was bid by Kelly and David Book. David is a new convert to the Catholic faith. He, his wife and children, Shane and Shaeleigh, are very active members of the parish. I look forward to having them and Fr. Mike to the rectory for dinner in early January.
Often times, youth can be dismissed by society as being self-centered and unaware of the needs of others. I have never found this to be the case and here at St. Luke, our young people are concerned citizens with caring hearts. Several weeks ago, they approached Nina wanting to help the poor in Paterson. They realized that yes, the poor get the basics of food but wanted them to have a sweet treat and asked if they could collect chocolates for purchase after the weekend Masses. There was a generous response to this and thanks to the generosity of our beloved parishioners, many impoverished families will feel the love of the families of St. Luke.
Below is a quick look at our Christmas schedule: I am very grateful to the many dedicated musicians and cantors who give so much of their time to enhance our Christmas Masses. A big thanks also to our extraordinary ministers, lectors and ushers who serve our parish with such loyalty and love. Happy Gaudete Sunday! Fr. Owen
